OUR STORY BEGINS in the early 1900s, when flat-bottomed schooners laden with oyster shells journeyed up the Petaluma River to unload their cargo. The thumbnail-sized shells, excavated from extensive beds in the south San Francisco Bay estimated to be 7,000 to 10,000 years old, were brought to Petaluma to be dried, crushed, graded and sacked for distribution to poultrymen and others to be used as chicken feed.
